Removing the Mask – Bronx Community College
Project Overview
Removing the Mask is a collaborative educational and artistic project developed by Professor Kelvin Cooper with students at Bronx Community College (CUNY).
The project explores the idea that many individuals wear emotional or social “masks” in order to navigate academic, social, and cultural environments.
Through reflection, dialogue, and performance, the project creates a space where students can explore authenticity, empathy, and personal growth.
Academic Context
The project was developed within courses taught by Professor Kelvin Cooper in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Bronx Community College.
Student reflections and experiences were drawn from several courses, including:
- Fitness for Life / Health and Fitness
- Afro-Caribbean Dance
- Stress Management
Each course provided students with tools to explore physical wellness, cultural identity, emotional awareness, and stress management.
Students’ Voices and Performances
The project features student interviews and reflections, where participants introduce themselves and share insights from their educational journeys.
Students discuss topics including:
• returning to education after long breaks
• balancing school, family, and work
• managing stress and mental health
• discovering personal strengths and talents
These reflections are interwoven with choreographic elements and creative work developed during the courses.
Themes of the Project
Throughout the project, students explore several central themes:
• authenticity and self-acceptance
• empathy and listening
• resilience and personal growth
• cultural identity and heritage
• social justice and community responsibility
Together, these themes illustrate how educational spaces can foster both intellectual development and emotional well-being.
Impact
Removing the Mask demonstrates how movement, dialogue, and reflective learning can support authentic expression and community care.
By encouraging students to share their stories and experiences, the project highlights the power of education to create spaces where individuals feel respected, heard, and empowered.
