Ghana – Teacher Empowerment & Restorative Wellness Workshops
Project Overview
As part of an international education and cultural exchange initiative, Professor Kelvin Cooper of Restorative Wellness Playground traveled to Ghana to facilitate a series of workshops focused on teacher empowerment, restorative practices, and intercultural movement.
The project connected educators, university students, community leaders, and young people through interactive learning experiences designed to strengthen leadership, well-being, and community engagement.
Through movement, dialogue, and collaborative exploration, participants examined how restorative practices and cultural expression can support healthier educational environments and stronger communities.
Invitation and Program Leadership
The program was organized and directed by Dr. Aminata Cairo, who invited Professor Kelvin Cooper to participate in the initiative.
Dr. Cairo’s work focuses on leadership development, cultural education, and community transformation, and the program was designed to support educators and community leaders in developing new tools for empowerment and engagement.
Professor Cooper joined the initiative to facilitate workshops that combined restorative wellness practices with movement-based learning.
Teacher Empowerment Workshops – North Ghana
In North Ghana, Professor Cooper facilitated workshops centered on Teacher Empowerment curriculum development with K-12 teachers and school principals.
These sessions explored how educators can cultivate learning environments that support both academic development and emotional well-being.
Workshop activities focused on:
• restorative dialogue practices for educators
• leadership development within school communities
• strategies for supporting student confidence and participation
• movement and body awareness exercises that help reduce stress and build classroom connection
These workshops provided teachers with practical tools to strengthen communication, empathy, and leadership within their schools.
University Workshops – Accra
Later in the program, Professor Cooper traveled to Accra where he facilitated workshops at Accra University.
These sessions introduced students and faculty to practices that combined spinal alignment, intercultural dance, and somatic movement.
Participants explored how physical alignment, breath, and rhythm can support wellness, creativity, and self-awareness while also strengthening cultural understanding.
The workshops highlighted the ways movement traditions can bridge academic learning and embodied experience.
Community Studio Workshops
In addition to university programming, Professor Cooper also facilitated workshops at a commercial dance studio in Accra, working with a diverse group of participants including:
• college faculty
• community teachers and administrators
• teenagers interested in movement and cultural expression
These sessions focused on restorative practices, dance, and community engagement, encouraging participants to explore how creative expression and dialogue can support personal growth and community leadership.
Through movement-based activities and reflective discussion, participants developed a deeper understanding of how cultural practices can strengthen empathy and collaboration.
Impact
The Ghana workshops demonstrated how restorative wellness practices and movement-based learning can support both educational leadership and community development.
By engaging teachers, university students, and community members in shared learning experiences, the program fostered dialogue across generations and professional roles.
These initiatives reflect the mission of Restorative Wellness Playground: creating spaces where culture, education, and movement intersect to support personal growth, leadership, and collective well-being.
